Rules and Regulations for the TACT 2019 Student Awards
Purpose
The TACT2019 Student Awards are to honor and encourage outstanding students carrying out research in areas related to thin film and coating technologies. TACT aims to recognize excellent students who show great promise for future achievement. The Awards will be given to students who present their research work by either oral or poster presentation.
Eligibility
The applicant must be
- A student at the time of the abstract submission and a presenting author in the Conference
Application Materials
Students must submit all of the following items in order through the Abstract Submission System on the TACT 2019 web before the deadline. Late or incomplete submission will not be considered.
- An abstract.
- Two-page English description of research associated with the submitted abstract following the format of Times New Roman font size 12 and single line spacing. The description is suggested to include:
- Objective of the work.
- Summary of the applicant's contribution to the work.
- Summary of significant results of the work.
- A recommendation letter from the student’s advisor.
- A resume, which includes at least the followings (if any)
- A list of journal and conference publications.
- Fellowships, scholarships, and honors/awards received, and academic related excellence and its relevant information.
Evaluation Process
Oral Presentation
- First round evaluation will be conducted by the Symposium Chairs in their own Symposium. Each Symposium evaluates the applications on the basis of the following: (1) resume: 25%, (2) recommendation letter: 25%, and (3) abstract and two-page description: 50%.
- Each Symposium selects the top 20% from its applicants as the quarter-finalists after the first round evaluation.
- From the quarter-finalists, each Symposium then recommends one presenter as the semi-finalists to the Oral Presentation Award Committee. Should the number of presentations in the Symposium exceed 50, one more semi-finalist can be recommended.
- The Oral Presentation Award Committee will select the top three presenters from all the semi-finalists for the awards of TACT 2019 Gold, Silver, and Bronze Student Awards.
- The top non-native English presenter from the remaining semi-finalist in each Symposium will be awarded with a TFS Special Award provided by the Thin Film Society. If there is no non-native English presenter in the semi-finalists, then the top non-native English speaker from the quarter-finalists will receive the TFS Special Award.
- The remaining semi-finalists in each Symposium will be also honored with a Certificate of Excellence.
Poster Presentation
- First round evaluation will be conducted by the Symposium Chairs in their own Symposium. Each Symposium evaluates the applications on the basis of the following: (1) resume: 25%, (2) recommendation letter: 25%, and (3) abstract and two-page description: 50%.
- Each Symposium selects the top 20% presenters from its applicants as the semi-finalists after the first round evaluation.
- Each Symposium then selects one best presenter from the semi-finalists for the Best Poster Award. Should the number of presentations in the Symposium exceed 50, one more Best Poster Award will be granted.
- Each symposium also selects the top 10% from the remaining semi-finalists to be honored with a Certificate of Excellence.
- 3-5 TACT 2019 Certificates of Best Poster Popularity Award will also be granted by collecting visiting stamps on site during the poster presentation. For more than 100 visiting stamps collected, the award will be decided based on lottery drawing. Application materials are not necessary.
Award Description
(1) TACT 2019 Gold Award: US$500 and an honored certificate.
(2) TACT 2019 Silver Award: US$400 and an honored certificate.
(3) TACT 2019 Bronze Award: US$300 and an honored certificate.
(4) TFS Special Award: US$150 and an honored certificate.
(5) Best Poster Award for each Symposium: US$150 and an honored certificate.
(6) TACT 2019 Certificate of Excellence.
(7) TACT 2019 Certificate of the Best Poster Popularity Award.
